17 year old Tahmina Begum from Tower Hamlets has broadened boundaries and conquered stereotypes to become the first Bangladeshi female referee in the UK.

Tahmina joined a group of 12 that passed the referee course. She said, “I wanted to do the course to become a qualified referee but had some reservations because I knew all the participants would be male and older than me.

"But I wanted to break down barriers and hope others willfollow in my footsteps."

Project Director, Kamrul Islam said, “Our work is to improve grass roots football and the referee course is one way of doing this. We have the first Bangladeshi female referee and she will be a role model for others to follow."

Tahmina, a dedicated sports freak is already a trained basketball coach and also possesses a Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA). The PE Assistant from a Tower Hamlets Primary school is also one of the deputy Young Mayors of the Borough.
